My mother always was a very judgemental woman.
“The Germans and Swiss are all Nazis,” she once said. When I told her that sweeping statements like that could be considered racist, she gave me a withering look and told me to stop being so ‘PC’.

I wasn’t being ‘PC’; she wasn’t being fair.

My mother believed that if you came from a bad family, you were a terrible person. If your parents hadn’t married they were whores, who were living in sin, and if they smoked and drank a lot they were common.

I don’t think she’d heard of just having fun.

She also thought that children always turned out just like their parents. I hope and pray that isn’t true, because if it is then I’ll eventually turn out like her.
